SOUTH PHOENIX:  A COMMUNITY OF FUN!

By:  Carrie Stoner

I was fortunate to have the experience of participating in a south Phoenix school festival wherein the neighborhood police and fire departments came together with the school to create a fun and entertaining atmosphere.

Unfortunately, when most people hear the words “south Phoenix” they immediately associate gangs, crime and drugs.  These same people automatically assume that when the youth of south Phoenix think about their local law enforcement, they immediately have negative thoughts.  That could not be further from the truth as I personally witnessed during my fieldwork, a huge party going on wherein the local police and fire departments were the invited guests by the youth of south Phoenix!

This was a very extravagant party with lots of parades, costumes and fun.  It was held right in the middle of south Phoenix at V.H. Lassen elementary school located at 909 W. Vineyard Road.  What was even more interesting about this party was the fact they welcomed us – total strangers – with open arms in that we were invited to not only enjoy the festivities going on but to also stay for a free lunch!

To me, this carnival totally epitomizes the way life really is in south Phoenix – one of common respect, loyalty and fun!
