A DAY AT

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY !!!

When the class first learned of it's mission to the Habitat for Humanity I was a little unsure how positive this trip would really be as we only had a couple of hours for construction.

When we arrived at the community I was surprised at what Habitat for Humanity had in progress at it's large development of affordable housing in South Phoenix. The man in charge of putting us to work at the jobsite was an older gentleman by the name of Romeo (pictured above). His ambition to get started and unbelievable energy is that of a 20 year olds.

ABOVE RIGHT: ME HARD @ WORK WITH MY BELLY HANGIN' LOW

After hanging drywall for a mere two and a half hours I was amazed that our class of twenty or so students with no prior experience in installing drywall, installed practically the whole ceiling of this new residence. I was wrong to imagine that minimal time equals minimal work completed.

The development of affordable housing in various forms by Habitat brings new life to the communities and individuals it affects. After listening to members of Habitat for Humanity team I learned that this program is great for those families whose income is very low and resources that are slim. The Habitat family has to meet very strict guidelines to be approved for help. According to Habitat for Humanity, families must:

-Have an income fall between 30% and 65% of the median income in the metro Phoenix area (according to the Arizona Department of Housing and Urban Development)

-Have a two-year history of stable income

-Have a good credit record

-Demonstrate the need for adequate housing

-Complete 400 hours of sweat equity. The family works first 100 hours building a fellow homeowner's house, and the remaining 300 hours is spent working on their own home.

-Attend classes in home maintenance, finance (budgeting & credit), and home ownership.
