HyperStudio
Stacks and the Web
Method
1:
Download and install a
HyperStudio plug-in for your browser. A plug-in is a
small program that works in conjunction with your web
browsing software. HyperStudio
has plug-ins available for Netscape and Internet
Explorer.
The plug-in installation program is available for
downloading from HyperStudio.
Simply download the
installation program, run it and follow the prompts.
The next time you click on a web page link that leads
to a HyperStudio stack, the plug-in will automatically start
allowing you to view the stack.
Caveats:
- It appears to us
that some combinations of operating system, browser,
HyperStudio stacks, and HyperStudio plug-ins don't
work properly. The plug-in may very well work
perfectly for you or not at all. If you find the
plug-in does not work for you, try Method 2 and
periodically check the HyperStudio web site for new
versions of the plug-in. Alternatively, many people
have both Internet Explorer and Netscape installed.
You could install the plug-in for both programs and
use the one that works.
- Another thing to be
aware of is that while basic HyperStudio functions are
supported by the plug-in, some more sophisticated NBA
(New Button Actions) are not. Ideally, the
person posting a stack on the web should test it first
to see if it works properly with the HyperStudio
plug-in. If the plug-in doesn't support all the
features in the stack, the author should not post it
or at least note the problems. However, you can't
always count on that so just be aware of the potential
problem.
Method
2:
Another method of viewing
HyperStudio stacks involves downloading HyperStudio Player.
HyperStudio Player is a stand alone program that you
can install on your own computer that will allow you to run
any HyperStudio stack. With this method you use your
web browser to find and download HyperStudio stacks but you
open/run them separately from your browser just as you would
any other program.
To use this method, first
download and run the HyperStudio
Player installation program
for your computer.
Then when you find a web page with your browser that
has a link to a HyperStudio stack you want to view, download
the stack, minimize/hide your browser, find the downloaded
stack on your computer and double click it. (To download a
stack using your browser: On Windows machines, RIGHT click
on the link to the stack and, depending on your
browser, chose either "Save link as" or "Save Target As."
On Macs, click and HOLD the mouse button down on the
link and, depending on your browser, choose "Save this link
as" or "Download link to disk.")
Caveats:
- Pay attention to
the links you find to HyperStudio stacks. If the link
leads directly to a HyperStudio stack, then you may
use Method 2. However, if the link leads to a
web page that automatically downloads the stack and
starts the HyperStudio Plug-in to view it then Method
2 will only allow you to download the web page and not
the stack itself.
- If you download
stacks using Method 2, please be mindful of copyright
considerations. Obviously if a stack is posted on the
web the author(s) intend for it to be viewed.
What may not be intended is for you to keep a
copy of their work on your machine indefinitely.
Unless specifically noted by the author(s), the
assumption should be that you should erase the stack
from your machine after 24 hours.
