Introduction
Welcome to the world of Charlotte's Web. This story is a delightful one about friendship between a girl named Fern and a pig named Wilbur. The story begins as Wilbur is born the runt of the litter. Fern's father, Mr. Arable, decides to end the pig's life as he would cost too much to raise. His daughter, Fern, is horrified by the fact that Wilbur might die so she begs her father to allow her to raise Wilbur. Mr. Arable gives in to to Fern until Wilbur gets too big and then he is moved to the Zuckerman's farm. Fern visits Wilbur every day at the Zuckerman's. It is at this farm where most of the magic of the story takes place. The many animals that are the cast of characters in this story come alive in their attempt to save Wilbur from the inevitable end of being served as someone's dinner. As this story is so full of imagination, it is only fit that this Web Quest will be an engaging one including many entertaining activities that go along with the book Charlotte's Web. These activities will include the story's characters, events, vocabulary, and much more.
The Task Your mission is to read Charlotte's Web and create an activity booklet that includes the items on the following list. You will be graded according to the rubric in the evaluation section of this Web Quest.
Creating your own Charlotte's Web activity booklet which includes:
1. A unique cover that is hand-drawn.
2. A vocabulary list that covers several chapters from the book. To assist you with the completion of this list, there is an on-line source that will link to a dictionary. Once each word is entered in the source, it will give a pronounciation and define each word.
3. A summary of selected chapters from the book including an illustration that is hand-drawn or uses Kid Pix .
4. Answers to comprehension questions to check for understanding of the story.
5. Completing an E.B. White worksheet.
6. Completing 4 out of the 9 assigned activities from the book.
The Process 1. Read Charlotte's Web Web Quest to familiarize yourself with each chapter section assignment.
2. Click on the following link to learn more about E.B. White and then complete this worksheet.
2. Link on The ABCs of Charlotte's Web and read it with a partner.
3. Before reading each chapter section, do the following:
- Review the vocabulary words from the chapter list below with your group, and complete the vocabulary section so you will recognize them in the story.
Chapters 1-4, click on the pig , and remember to click word central to define your vocabulary words.
Chapters 5-8, click on Fern's hair, and remember to click word central to define your vocabulary words.
Chapters 9-11, click on the sheep, and remember to click word central to define your vocabulary words.
Chapters 12-14, click on the barn door , and remember to click word central to define your vocabulary words.
Chapters 15-17, click on Charlotte's Web , and remember to click word central to define your vocabulary words.
Chapters 18-20, click the goose, and remember to click word central to define your vocabulary words.
Chapters 21-22, click on Templeton, and remember to click word central to define your vocabulary words.
- Discuss each word's meaning with your group.
4. Read the chapter section pausing after each chapter to write a summary with an illustration. Using KidPix or hand-drawing the illustrations is acceptable. While reading each section, check the vocabulary section in your activity booklet to see if your meaning is correct. Click here to see some examples of chapter summaries.
5. After each chapter section, complete the comprehension questions with a partner. ( Chapters 1-4, 5-8, 9-11, 12-14, 15-17, 18-20, 21-22) and answer the comprehension questions.
6. Complete 4 out of the 9 assigned activities from the book. Make sure that you keep a print out or keep a list of what you've completed. The list of activities is as follows:
Reading Activities:
- Apply your knowledge of your new vocabulary words to the following vocabulary quiz.
- Use your knowledge of the story to complete the interactive puzzle on Charlotte's Web.
- Test your knowledge of the story by seeing if you are able to complete the Mystery Quotes Quiz .
- Play the millionaire game to test your knowledge of Charlotte's Web.
Language Activities:
- Make a story about a visit to the farm using different parts of speech. Read it to a classmate.
- Complete this activity answering the following question. If animals could talk, which animal would you talk to and what would you talk about?
- An adjective is a word that describes a noun. Charlotte uses many adjectives to describe Wilbur. Use your knowledge of adjectives from Charlotte's Web to complete the adjective worksheet .

- Solve the Math Quiz to see what Templeton is trying to tell you.

Evaluation You will be graded as a group and individually. each activitywill count towards a group grade. Individual grades will come from the completion of your activity booklet and the individual choices that were made with individual activities that you completed. You will also be evaluated according to this rubric.
Conclusion Charlotte's Web is a wonderful story for all ages. It enhances the imagination and helps us identufy the true meaning of friendship. I hope after completing this Web Quest, you have learned new vocabulary, made new friends, and become more familiar with the internet. Maybe you'll even want to introduce this book and Web Quest to your friends and family.
