I decided to do this web quest, because I want the students to understand elements to the time period of Romeo and Juliet. I also wanted them to become better writers and begin understanding journalism. Also this project is cross-curricular and meets or exceeds standards.
This lesson has many different elements that can be beneficial to all students. It is also a good project that involves collaborative work between all of the students. Every student will have a job and they have to figure out a way to get all of the assignments done while working as a team.
This lesson has been developed for 8th grade and up. It was designed for 8th grade because most 8th graders have read Romeo and Juliet. It was also designed because it will be a excellent piece for a portfilio and could be used as a end of the year project to show what they have they learned throughout the year.
Before starting this project the students need to have an good understanding of the play Romeo and Juliet. They also should have an understanding of the elements of a newspaper.
What will students learn as a result of this lesson? Describe the outcomes succinctly. Use the language of existing standards. For example: Social Studies and Language Standards Addressed Recognize the relationships among the various parts of a nation's cultural life. Use correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar and usage, along with varied sentence structure and paragraph organization, to complete effectively a variety of writing tasks Write a summary that presents information clearly and accurately, contains the most significant details and preserves the position of the authorWrite an expository essay that contains effective introductory and summary statements and fully develops the ideas with details, facts, examples and descriptions Write formal communications, such as personal or business letters, messages, directions and applications, in an appropriate format and for a specific audience and purpose
1. Begin by quickly scanning the play to refresh your memory of its contents.
The assignment is giving to the kids and then either you put them into groups of 5 or more or they can get into groups themselves. This project will take about 2 weeks to do. It will take more than one class period, if you have block schedules them it might take 3 or 4 periods to teach the basis. It is a mullti-disciplined concept and cross curricular.
If there are misconceptions or stumbling blocks that you anticipate, describe them here and suggest ways to get around them.
The webquest really takes care of itself no real big skills needed except to the need for patience and keeping everyone on task. I would assign a group leader to keep the others on task.
Here’s what you need: * Class sets of books or plays of Romeo and Juliet * Internet * Microsoft Word * Video or audio materials
List here the sources of any images, music or text that you're using (with permission, of course). Provide links back to the original source. Say thanks to anyone who provided resources, help or inspiration.
Don't relist all the links you've already included. They're self-documenting.
As a matter of style and to keep ownership clear, all pages that you call up that are external to this site should appear in a new window outside of this frame. Add "TARGET=_BLANK" to the link to bring this about.
List any books and other analog media that you used as information sources as well.
Include a link back to The WebQuest Page and the Design Patterns page so that others can acquire the latest version of this template and training materials.
