Introduction

This lesson was developed to provide a constructivist learning environment for children as they develop an awareness about endangered species. I created Zooquest for a project in the course EDT 548: Using Technology in Mathematics and Science Education at Arizona State University West.

Zooquest give students an opportunity to use critical thinking skills as they maneuver the web to explore endangered species. As learners work as a team to research a specific animal, they learn about their chosen animal's physical characteristics, habitat, diet, adaptations, predators, how they care for their young, and the reasons for their endangerment.

Each student writes and publishes a public research report detailing specific information about their endangered animal. Students also inlclude an action plan encouraging public support to save their animal from extinction. Within each report, students must include a works cited page citing all Internet resources used. In addition, student teams create a three dimensional zoo exhibit model and they orally present their exhibit and report to the class.

Arizona Curriculum Standards

Science Standards (Grades 6-8)

Standard 4: Life Science

Students understand the characteristics of living things, the diversity of life and how organisms change over time in terms of biological adaptation and genetics. Students understand the interrelationships of matter and energy in living organisms and the interactions of living organisms with their environment.

4SC-F7. Explain the interaction of living and non-living components within ecosystems

PO 1. Describe organism adaptations or constancy over geologic time

PO 2. Identify environmental factors that may determine adaptations or constancy of an organism over geologic time

Technology Standards (Grades 6-8)

Standard 1: Fundamental Operations and Concepts

Students understand the operations and function of technology systems and are proficient in the use of technology.

IT-E2. Demonstrate increasingly sophisticated operation of technology conponents

PO 2. Retrieve and save information remotely (e.g.,network servers, Internet, Intranet, peripheral devices)

Standard 2: Social, Ethical and Human Issues

Students understand the social, ethical and human issues related to using technology in their daily lives and demonstrate responsible use of technology systems, information and software.

2T-E1. Discuss basic issues related to responsible use of technology and information and describe personal consequences of inappropriate use

PO 1. Describe and practice safe Internet/Intranet usage (e.g., do not post inappropriate or harmful material; do not reveal personal information; follow district Acceptable Use Policy)

Standard 5: Technology Research Tools

Students will use technology based research tools to locate and collect information pertinent to the task as well as evaluate and analyze information from a variety of sources.

5T-E2. Evaluate the accuracy, relevance, appropriateness, comprehensiveness and bias of electonic infomations sources

PO 1. Create citations for electonic research sources following a prescribed format

PO 2. Gather research from a variety of electronic sources and identify the most appropriate information for answering the research question

PO 5.. Identify the author of the information found from electronic resources and determine whether the author is an authority, displays bias and is a primary or secondary source

Writing Standards (Grades 6-8)

Standard 2: Writing

Students effectively use written language for a variety of purposes and with a variey of audiences.

W-F5. Locate, acknowledge and use several sources to write and informational report in their own words

PO 1 Use resources (e.g., video tapes, magazines, informational books, reference materials, interviews, guest speakers, Internet) and report information in their own words

PO 2. Write an introductory statement, followed by details to support the main idea

PO 3 List resources used by title
