Students interview their parents to find out how they use math at home or at work. Students and parents collaborate on writing a story problem that shows how the parent uses math. A multimedia program like PowerPoint is then used to create a collection of story problems and illustrated answers.

The students will be read a book (Each Orange Had Eight Slices by Giganti) with a multiplication theme, and then explore the model with realistic settings. The lesson closes with students writing their original problems using this model.
