This is the egg stage. The egg comes from the mom butterfly. There are 250-1000 egges. The egg stage lasts for a few days to 9 months. The eggs look like footballs. The eggs are kept on a leaf or under a leaf. The stage ends when the caterpillar comes out and it's a butterfly.

The caterpillar stage is 1 week to 2 months. The caterpillar eats plants and leaves. It is important for the caterpillar to eat a lot so it can have enough strength in the chrysalis stage to turn into a butterfly.

The skin shrinks and splits apart. This is the last molt. The chrysalis appears from underneath its skin. The caterpillar finds a sheltered place, unsually on a twig. In the chrysalis wings form, the prolegs disappear, the true legs become the long legs of the butterfly. The srysalis stage lasts for 10 -14 days. The butterfly emerges from the chrysalis.

A butterfly lives for 1 week or so. Butterflies mate and lay eggs. Butterflys eat plants. Butterflys sleep under plants at night.
