Online Researching Resources

As the Internet grows, so do the opportunities for doing in-depth research using online resources. Dr. Alice Christie will showcase the ever-growing Internet resources that students and teachers can use to enhance their learning. She will discuss effective strategies for using search engines, ways to locate and use searchable online databases and online encyclopedias and almanacs, strategies for using and creating online field trips, ideas for using online simulations or web cams, and strategies for finding and using primary source material.

The Changing Face of Literacy

Dr. Alice Christie will discuss the ways literacy is changing as we move toward an ever more techno-centric world, highlighting the challenges of these new literacies for teachers, students and parents. She will discuss the paradigm shifts in teaching and learning that are possible in classrooms when teachers make full use of the new technological tools available to them. She concludes with a discussion of recent trends in Internet use that affect students and the ways in which they learn, and she will share her predictions about where we are headed with technology in education in the next decade.



Using the Internet to Enhance Teaching and Learning
in Language Arts

The Internet is growing exponentially and each day provides more and more resources for teachers and learners of all ages! Dr. Alice Christie will provide a wide variety of resources that may be useful for enhancing teaching and learning in the Language Arts in K-12 classrooms. She will also explore a number of themes relating to enhancing reading and writing skills of today's students, including:

  • Using online tools for enhancing reading, writing, and critical thinking
  • Increasing audience through developing global classrooms
  • Increasing audience through publishing student work
  • Using Internet resources for literacy and literature
  • Using the Internet for research
  • Finding and using teacher resources and tools for teaching

Dr. Christie's research has shown that extensive reading and writing using the Internet and email enhances students' reading and writing skills extensively. It also prepares them to be literate citizens of the 21st century.
