Saving
PowerPoint as a Web Page
by Dr. Alice Christie
This tutorial provides
step by step directions and suggestions.
Actions taken by the user are printed in
bold,
blue type.
- Create and Save your
PowerPoint presentation for viewing in a
face-to-face situation.
- I suggest a few
guidelines before saving your presentation for web
viewing (in an HTML format). They include:
- If you have used a
dark background and light-colored font, go to
Format
> Slide Color
Scheme and
change the color scheme so you have a light background
and dark font
- If you have used
anything other than the standard font, go to
View
> Master > Slide
Master and
change to a standard font. I usually also change the
font style to Bold
- Use no spaces or
punctuation marks in the name of your HTML
presentation
- Use no spaces or
punctuation marks in the name of your presentation
folder
- After creating and
saving your PowerPoint presentation, choose
File
> Save as HTML.
Name your presentation, remembering to use no spaces or
punctuation marks in your name. Once you click
OK,
a wizard will open to help you save your slide show. The
first screen is an introductory page.

Click Next.
- In the layout
selection screen, choose either a
Standard
or Browser
Frames
layout. Frames make a separate window on the side, as
seen in the graphic below. I generally choose Standard
for two reasons:
- I want the screen
to be as uncluttered as possible;
- I want the
presentation to cover as much as the viewing area as
possible.

After making your selection, click
Next.
- In the Choose Graphic
Type screen, you have a choice between
GIF
and JPEG.
I generally choose JPEG as this format requires less
memory than the GIF format if high compression is used.
Experiment and see which looks better for your
presentation.

After making your selection, click
Next.
- You can choose how
large your graphics appear in the graphic size screen.
The lower numbers indicate lower resolutions. Keep your
major audience in mind. If your presentation is geared
toward K-12 education, many schools still have low
resolution monitors. In this case, I recommend
640
x 480.
Otherwise, I recommend 800
by 600. I
generally choose 3/4
width of screen
for the width of graphics. This minimizes the chance of
needing to scroll for viewing.

After making your selection, click
Next.
- The information screen
asks for your email
address, your
HomePage
URL. I always
suggest adding this information so people can contact you
by email or find out more about you from your HomePage.
If you wish to add other
information,
you may be do so in the Other Information box.

I generally "unclick"
Download
original presentation.
That
way, folks may see my ideas, but not use my presentation
without my permission.
After making your selection, click
Next.
- You may select to use
the default colors, or define your own custom colors by
clicking the button for custom colors. I generally use
browser
colors, as I am
sure my text will be readable when viewed.

After making your selection, click
Next.
- The button style
screen allows you to select a button style by clicking on
the desired style. This choice reflects a personal
preference.

After making your selection, click
Next.
- The layout options
screen allows you to choose where your buttons are placed
on the screen. I generally choose
Right,
as this reduces the need to scroll when viewing the
presentation.
You may also choose to include side notes on your pages
here. Click
or "unclick" as
desired.

After making your selection, click
Next.
- Create an HTML folder
for your presentation slides on your hard drive, disk, or
server. To do this, click Select
and browse to the appropriate place. Create a new folder
for your HTML presentation. Remember to use no spaces or
punctuation marks in the name of your folder.

After making your selection, click
Next.
- When you click
Finish
in the last wizard screen, the slides will save the
folder you specified.

Congratulations!
You have reached the end of the tutorial!
