The theme of our Learning Community was What Does it Mean to be an Educated Person? In UNI 101, we discussed ways in which higher education could help us. We also discussed how to make the adjustment from high school student to college student. In ENG 101, we wrote three different essays on our learning experiences during different phases of our lives. These essays appear on the webpages we created in CSE 180.

When we were learning how to create spreadsheets in CSE 180, we thought more about what it means to be an educated person. We brainstormed and came up with five definitions or ways of being an educated person:

  • participate in higher education
  • possess common sense and real-world knowledge
  • participate in a broad set of experiences
  • be self taught
  • be open minded and open to new ideas

CSE 180 Results

The majority of the CSE 180 class believes that having a higher education (education beyond high school) and real world knowledge describes an educated person.

A total of 64% of us believe having a higher education and real world knowledge makes an educated person.

So obviously, most of us believe that you should attend college or some institution of learning after high school to become more educated.

Results of Our Poll

When we polled our friends and family members, we found some similar results. The largest number of people believe higher education was the key to being an educated person. But close behind higher education was broad experiences and real world knowledge.

Just as in the survey of class members, open-mindedness and being self-taught received the fewest votes. We conclude that we, our friends, and family all value higher education. This is not surprising, as all of us have chosen to become freshmen at ASU West this year.
