Our Survey for Faculty Members

After sending faculty members a survey to discover their perceptions about the first freshman class, we graphed the survey results using Microsoft Excel. We also recorded their responses to open-ended questions. On this page, we share the faculty's perceptions from our survey.

Twenty-seven percent of faculty who responded taught freshmen this semester.

These faculty members felt that many freshmen were outgoing and motivated while a few were shy or reserved.

No faculty members describe the freshmen as irritated or discouraged. Many chose to describe them in their own terms, rather than choose from one of the descriptions we gave in our survey.

Almost 90% of the faculty approve of Learning Communities. Only a few are disappointed with Learning Communities for the first freshman class at ASU West.

Faculty are divided in their perceptions about uses of campus facilities by freshmen.

46% believe they make adequate use of the facilities, while 36% disagree.

Almost one-fifth of the faculty did not have enough information to answer the question.

Faculty were happily surprised with the number of students to enrolled as freshman this year. Some were surprised with the level of motivation freshmen showed.

More than one-third indicated they were surprised in ways other than those we mentioned in our survey.

A Few Quotes from Faculty about the Freshman Experience

I have really enjoyed having freshmen on campus and in my class this year. They are enthusiastic and want to learn.

Initially I thought the mood on campus would changed with the addition of freshmen? So far, I haven't noticed much change.

The freshmen were open, honest and wanted to learn.

I have totally enjoyed teaching this bright group of students. They are bright, innovative, and energetic.
