We sent all freshman students a survey to discover their perceptions about the first freshman class; approximately 55% of the freshmen responded to our survey. We graphed the survey results using Microsoft Excel. We also recorded their responses to open-ended questions. On this page, we share students' perceptions from our survey. Our thanks to the ENG 101 instructors who distributed the Student Survey in their classes.

The majority of our freshman classes consisted of 25-40 students.

Almost 40% of us had classes of
15-25 students.

None of us had classes with more than 40 students.

In general, we were very pleased with the size of our classes.

We found many useful facilities at ASU West.

More than one-third of us used Fletcher Library, and almost one-third of us used Technopolis.

One quarter of us depended on advisors for help, and a few of us used the Learning Enhancement Center.

Each of us was invited to join a Learning Community.

About 70%of us actually participated in Learning Communities.

About half of us felt positively about our Learning Communities, but 40% were disappointed in their Learning Communities.

Part of the Learning Communities was a course called UNI 101. In general, we were disappointed with UNI 101 and would not recommend it to incoming freshmen.

During our first semester, we spent between 2 and 6 hours per week on homework for each class we attended.

Most of us balanced work and school this semester.

87%of the students in the first freshman class worked at the same time they attended ASU West.

Many of us were happily surprised by the size of the campus and the size of our classes.

Others were pleasantly surprised about how easily they were able to interact with their professors.

Although our overall experience at ASU West has been very positive, we share a few concerns.

They included our disappointment with UNI 101, crowded parking, and courses that we felt were above a freshman level.

A Few Other Statistics

Some Quotes by Freshmen

The faculty have made us feel welcome, they helped us get to know each other.

Learning communities are good. They helps you to get to know each other and your professors.

I didn't like the UNI 101 because it didn't benefit my major. I learned all of the stuff in there in High School.

UNI 101 helps you get acquainted with college life. It also gives you the chance to work with other students from the same classes.

I would like to see more physical activities (like soccer) here at ASU West.

Some Quotes by Upperclassmen

I wish they had made ASU West a four-year University years ago when I was a freshman.

The transition has been pretty good so far. They need to make more room in the parking lot, though.

The atmosphere at ASU West has changed since the freshmen arrived. It is more energetic and enthusiastic.

I actually like having freshmen here. A few of them have attitude problems and feel really cool. It is all because of age and the new life that they are experiencing.
