Publishing on the COE Server from a PC
The directions below are for using WS_FTP but other FTP clients will be
similar.
Using WS_FTP is pretty simple. After installing it, when you start
it up you see a screen like this:
-
First, there will likely be a default profile that you see so you should
create a new one to save all your settings. This is basically a one-time
process although you may save changes at anytime and have as many profiles
as you wish. Click New.
-
Fill in a name for this profile. Call it whatever you wish.
-
Fill in the host server name which is:
coe.west.asu.edu
-
Fill in your COE account name. This is the account you created from
the link on the class syllabus. If you can't remember your account
name (or password), email Gary
or Alice and then be sure that
you do the next step:
-
Now, to make sure that you save this profile before you connect, click on
Save.
-
Fill in your password for your COE account. If you you have trouble
remembering it, click on the check box on the right to "Save Password" and
then click the Save button again. All the other fields you may leave blank.
PLEASE NOTE:
-
If you save your password, then anyone with physical access to your machine
can gain access to your web space and the COE server. Please DO NOT use this
option from a school computer.
-
Now, click on OK or you can simply press the Enter key.
When you connect you will hear a train horn sound and then you see a screen
like this:
-
The local directory appears in this window. Change directories and
select files just like you do in Windows Explorer--click on the green arrow
to go up one level of directory and change disks if needed by double-clicking
on the drive letter.
-
This is the directory you are connected to on the COE Server. The single
forward slash (/) indicates that you are in the "root" or base level of YOUR
space on the server. You cannot gain access to any folders(directories) above
yours. You may create folders in your space if you wish.
-
In this window you see the last two lines of the status message log. This
will give you some indication of successfully completed operations or error
that have occurred.
-
You can use these arrows to scroll up and down through the log or....
-
...you can click on this button to open a window with the whole log shown.
-
Before transferring files, make sure the Auto box is checked so the program
will automatically choose the proper protocol to use in transferring text/HTML
(ASCII) or Binary files.
-
After selecting the files you want to transfer and the directory you want
to transfer them to, click on the arrow that points in the direction of the
transfer. Normally this will be the bottom one that points to the right
to upload your files to the COE server but you could just as easily choose
your files from the COE Server and transfer them to your local machine with
the other arrow.
You will see status messages about the the transfer. Depending on the
speed of your connection and the size and number of files you are transferring,
it may take awhile to complete. WS_FTP will play a sound when the transfer
is complete or a cute little "uh-oh" sound if something goes wrong.
-
When you are done you can close the connection.
-
Then you can exit the program.
