Publishing to the COE Server from a Mac
These directions are for using FETCH but other FTP clients will work
similarly.
Here are instructions for using FETCH on the Macs in
CLCC 213:
*June 26, 1999 UPDATE* - Fetch was removed from
the machines in 213 during the last upgrade of the computers. We were
able to get it back on all the machines however we have since discovered
only the installer file was put on the machines. If you need to use
Fetch from 213, have Alice or Gary install the program before using
it.
-
From the "Internet" section of the Launcher, click on the icon for FETCH
3.01.
-
Most likely you will see a window labeled "New Connection" that will pop
up. If you don't see it, open the FILE menu and choose "New Connection."
-
Inside that New Connection window, click on the arrow next to the word Shortcut
to open up a list of FTP servers. Choose the one labeled "COE Server."
-
Now the host name changes to "coe.west.asu.edu" which is the name of the
COE Server. If you want to use a program from home or outside CLCC 213 you
need to make note of this name.
-
Now type in your user ID and password that you gave when you created your
COE account. If you don't recall your account name or password, email
Alice or
Gary.
-
Leave the directory field blank.
-
Click OK.
-
Now you see a new window open up and little running dog icon while the computer
is making the connection to the COE Server.
-
Towards the bottom of the window you should see three radio buttons for
Automatic, Text, and Binary. Make sure the Automatic button is selected.
-
To put (upload) your HTML files in your server space, open the REMOTE menu
and choose "Put Folders and Files..."
-
That opens a box for you to select all the files and folders you want to
upload or "put" on the COE server. You can open a folder and select individual
files by highlighting each file name and clicking the ADD button or select
all the files in a folder by clicking ADD ALL. If you select a folder, all
the files in the folder, will be transferred. When you have selected all
the files you want transferred, click on "Done."
-
Now you see a little pop up box about choosing formats for the files you
want to upload. Use the default values of "Text" and "MacBinary." Just click
OK.
-
You see the little running dog again while the computer is transferring the
files you selected to the COE Server and assuming you don't see any error
messages, you're done!
Maintenance issues:
Changing file names: Change file names using the Remote menu. You
will be prompted for the old name and the new name. NOTE: Be aware
that if you change a file name you must also change any of your files that
link to the changed file.
Creating Directories (folders): To create a new directory (folder)
use the "Create New Directory" item on the Directory menu.
Using Fetch on Macs outside of CLCC 213
First, start the program. It may or may not be on your computer's Launcher
so you might have to look for it.
Before connecting, one potential problem you should check is how the default
settings may be different. Specifically, one setting that may very well be
changed is an option to add ".bin" to the names of any binary file
that is uploaded using the "MacBinary" protocol. This would mean Fetch would
add ".bin" to all your graphic file names (all graphics are in binary
format) as they are transferred to the COE Server. If this happens all you
have to do is rename the files after they are transferred but the easier
way is to make sure the setting is correct in the first place:
-
Go to the Customize menu and choose Preferences.
-
Click on the Upload tab.
-
Clear the box where it says "Add .bin suffix to MacBinary II files"
-
Click on OK
Beyond how you start the program and it's default settings, the rest of the
directions above apply to using Fetch outside of 213.
