Banned Books Reading

Faith and culture based campus organizations are strongly encouraged to participate in this event. Audience members may participate by reading from any banned or challenged texts. Bring your own book OR check one out of the library!

Women Confronting Globalization

  • Discuss threats to indigenous communities, especially women, such as the Central American Free Trade Agreement, Free Trade Area of the Americas, North American Free Trade Agreement, Plan Puebla Panama, and the corn and coffee crises in Mexico.
  • Discuss human rights abuses in Mexico, their relationship to globalization and how indigenous communities are working to end the abuses and impunity.
  • Discuss the political context for the Red Alert called by Zapatista communities in the summer of 2005, and the 6th Declaration of the Selva Lacandona issued by the Zapatistas, in terms of how it relates to the development of alternative economies.
  • Promote a sustainable model of international trade based on economic justice.
  • Discuss the leadership of women in fair trade cooperatives.
  • Offer weavings and traditional handicrafts made in women's cooperatives for sale to raise money to improve living conditions in communities.

Take action! Defend the rights of indigenous communities in the Amazon who have been forever scarred by the contamination of their source of survival. Defend those in Bhopal, India where more than half a million people continue to suffer even 20 years after the largest chemical disaster in world history.

Western Regional Conference

Program highlights include panels on Sudan, "War on Terror", Torture in Iraq, Violence against Women, Refugees, Corporate Accountability, etc.

International Caravan for Justice in Juarez and Chihuahua

On October 28, Phoenix will host the International Caravan for Justice in Juarez and Chihuahua City on its way to the twin border cities of El Paso, TX and Juarez, Mexico. The Caravan is a bi-national effort to demand justice in the cases of nearly 400 young and poor women murdered in Juarez since 1994. Raising consciousness about conditions faced by women along the border, participants in the Caravan will conclude their journey with a bi-national march from El Paso to Juarez.

Hosted by the Phoenix College Amnesty International Group, the Phoenix stop of the Caravan will feature personal testimony by the mother of a young woman killed in 1995.
