Abstract: Human Rights Meets Feminism - the International Campaign to Stop Femicide in Ciudad Juarez.

In the paper, the authors lay out the dimensions of the femicide in Juarez as well as the contextual factors in the city that made it so difficult to stop. They then turn their attention to the campaigns to stop the femicide with a particular focus on the coalition between Amnesty and V-Day International that culminated in a march on Valentine’s Day of 2004. The paper tries to explain the multiple levels of political mobilization necessary for bringing a local atrocity like the Juarez femicide to two influential international NGOs like Amnesty and V-Day. And this campaign has yielded positive results.

Biography

Carol Mueller is a sociology professor at ASU's west campus. (more info)

Stan Buzzelle is a senior at ASUW, majoring in sociology and political science. Stan also retains his position as director of American Family Credit Counseling, a non-profit agency that provides personal financial counseling and debt repayment plans to consumers who find themselves overburdened with financial obligations. Stan co-founded the agency 12 years ago after spending 13 years in banking and consumer finance management. During the last 12 years he has conducted numerous free workshops for financially disadvantaged groups throughout the Valley of the Sun and he continues to make himself available for that purpose. A U.S.A.I.D. sponsored trip to Romania in 2001 to train social workers in personal budgeting was the catalyst that prompted Stan’s decision to return to school. After graduating this spring he will be joining the graduate program of the School of Justice and Social Inquiry at ASU’s Tempe campus in the fall. His goal is to eventually teach at the college or university level.
