The quarterly reports are presented in 4 pages.  The first page contains the rates of booked arrestees by age, race, and urinalyses results for specific drugs.  The second page provides comparisons between self-reported drug use and actual urine test results.  This page also contains information on education level, housing characteristics, and employment status.
One of the major characteristics of the new instrument is a Calendar section, which asks arrestees to report their drug use and treatment history for the past year.  Page three of the quarterly reports now reports the information gathered by the Calendar and also reports the risk of dependency and abuse for arrestees.   The last page of the reports contains information on drug markets for the past 30 days.  In this page, you will find information on where and how drugs are being purchased by arrestees.
Enclosed you will find the quarterly reports for the year 2000.  In sum, on average 65% of male arrestees in Maricopa County tested positive for Any Drug, 34% for Marijuana, and 32% for Cocaine.  Male findings in Pima County reveal that 70% of arrestees tested positive for Any Drug, 45% for Marijuana, and 41% for Cocaine.  Data among female arrestees in Maricopa County show that on average, 54% of them tested positive for Any Drug, 19% for Marijuana, and 29% for Cocaine.  Female findings in Pima County reveal that 42 % of arrestees tested positive for Any Drug, 16% for Marijuana, and 30% for Cocaine.
We are very excited to bring you this new information on drug abuse among the arrestee population.  We look forward to hearing from you and hope local agencies within Arizona find it informative and useful.

Text Box: 2000 ADAM Annualized Reports
It is with great enthusiasm that we provide you with the latest quarterly reports for the ADAM data gathering efforts in 2000.  We are pleased to now be able to provide you with the data findings for both Maricopa and Pima Counties for the year 2000.  Specifically, the enclosed first three quarterly reports for Maricopa County contain only data collected from Madison County Jail.  However, the 4th quarter reports along with subsequent reports contain data gathered from three facilities (e.g., Madison County Jail, Mesa and Glendale, Arizona).
We think it would be useful to review with you the latest changes in the data gathering efforts and also comment on the manner in which the data is presented in the quarterly reports.  As you may recall, a new instrument along with a sampling plan were introduced in various ADAM sites to capture a representative account of drug abuse among male arrestees.  This sampling plan would allow us to measure with accuracy the level of drug use among not only those surveyed in county jails but all those arrested in other facilities in the county (the population of arrestees in a given geographic area).
This change now allows us to report the standard error and confidence intervals for findings on percent positive for Any Drug, Cocaine, Marijuana, Heroin, Methamphetamine, PCP, and Multiple Drugs.   Thus, the confidence intervals allow us to report for example, that we are 95 percent confident that +/- 6 percent of arrestees test positive for Marijuana in a given catchment area.  Since the sampling plan has only been implemented for adult males, there will now be separate reports for males and females.  We do however expect a sampling frame for females to be implemented in the upcoming year.  Data on juveniles will continue to be presented in the same manner it has been and reports on juvenile data for the year 2000 can be made available to you upon request.
