All adult arrestees sampled in Pima County/Tucson, AZ during each quarter of 1999 are included in these findings.   During 1999, 946 males and 333 females provided urine samples for drug testing.   According to urinalyses, over 38% of both males and females tested positive for cocaine.  The most common drug used by males was marijuana (45%) followed by cocaine (40%).   However, cocaine was the most prevalent drug used by women (41%) with marijuana used at a much lower rate (24%).  Black and Hispanic males tested positive at the highest rates for cocaine (63% and 46%), while white males tested positive most for marijuana (47%).  Females of all races had higher rates of positive cocaine tests than any other drug tested.   Testing positive for any drug seems to remain fairly constant across age groups for both males and females.  However, this pattern appears to be drug dependent.  For instance, marijuana use appears lower in the higher age ranges.  Specifically, 66% of 15 - 20 year old males tested positive for marijuana, while only 32% of males 36 and older testing positive for marijuana.  Conversely, rates of cocaine use are higher in older age ranges but decline for males in the 31 -35 age range and in the 36+ age range for females.  Interestingly, females charged with drug offenses had a higher rate of cocaine use than any other drug and any other type of offender.  Finally, females charged with drug offenses tested positive for methamphetamine at higher rates than males (17% vs. 9%).
