Demographic Information
Table 2 presents basic demographic information on the population of arrestees in Maricopa and Pima Counties. The arrestee population in both counties tended to be young with two-thirds falling between the ages of 18 and 35. The percentages of arrestees within each age range were remarkably consistent for both males and females (generally falling within 3%). In Maricopa County, most arrestees were White (43.8% of males and 45.9% of females), while nearly a third were Hispanic (34.6% of males and 26% of females). In Pima County, Hispanics comprised the majority of the arrestee population. This composition differs by gender though; Hispanics were the majority among male arrestees and Whites were predominant among females. The majority of Hispanics in both counties reported being Mexican, Mexican-American, or Chicano/a. Most of the arrestees falling into the “Other” category simply considered themselves “Hispanic” and the majority of arrestees in the multi-ethnic category reported being part Mexican. In both counties the majority of arrestees reported being born in the United States and the majority of those born outside the U.S. reported that they were residing in the country legally. However, in Maricopa County, 5.6% of males reported having no legal documents, much higher than the 1.5% of male arrestees in Pima County and the less than 1% of female arrestees in both counties reporting no legal documents. Just over 3% of the arrestees in each county spoke no English and the interview was conducted in Spanish (the percentage of non-English speakers among the arrestee population is probably somewhat higher as Spanish-speaking interviewers were not always available).
In terms of education, approximately one-third of arrestees in Maricopa and Pima Counties had less than a high-school degree. Another third of arrestees had a high-school degree or GED as their highest level of schooling. Only 4-5% of arrestees in either county had earned a 4-year college degree, though 20-28% of arrestees have earned some college credit or a 2-year degree.
The unemployment rate among arrestees was high, with the rate for females around 12% higher than males. More arrestees were working in Maricopa County than in Pima County with a 5.4% difference for males and a 7.8% difference for females.
The living situations of arrestees were similar in Maricopa and Pima Counties. Over half of the arrestees reported being single; close to 20% report being married; and, around 16% were divorced. Interestingly, more than twice as many women reported being separated in both counties. Most arrestees (upwards of 80%) lived primarily in a house, mobile home, or apartment over the past month. Slightly more arrestees in Pima County were homeless (11.3% versus 8.2%) and in both counties the percentage of women who were homeless was just below the percentage of men.
