Giving an Impromptu Speech

  1. Be physically prepared by drinking tepid water to lubricate your vocal cords
  2. Relax by stretching and breathing deeply
  3. Establish your message
  4. Write down a few quick notes (i.e., a mini outline)
  5. Try to speak naturally (act like it's a conversation) so you don't sound rehearsed
  6. Speak with confidence
  7. Maintain eye contact
  8. Try not to show nervousness (i.e., Don't hide behind the podium.)
  9. Trust your instincts: if a new idea of something valuable to add comes to you during your speech, say it
  10. Deliver a strong conclusion
