Checking the Room Setup

  1. Arrive early to walk around the speaking area
  2. Inspect the area to ensure the audience’s safety (e.g., Know where fire extinguishers are.)
  3. Turn room lights up unless you are using visual aids that require dim lights
  4. Keep a soft light on yourself if using visual aids
  5. Practice using the microphone and/or visual aids
  6. Have backup equipment or a fallback plan (e.g., handouts) in case the visual equipment fails
  7. Move your presentation location (e.g., podium) as close to the front row as possible
  8. Check the sound system to ensure audibility throughout the room
  9. Keep outside noise to a minimum (e.g., close door, turn off cell phone, etc.)
  10. Keep a glass of water near your presentation location
