Goals of PME-NA
a) To promote
international contacts and the exchange of scientific information in the
psychology of mathematics education;
b) To promote and stimulate interdisciplinary research in the aforesaid
area with the cooperation of psychologists, mathematicians and mathematics
educators;
c) To further a deeper and better understanding of the psychological aspects
of teaching and learning mathematics and implications thereof.
Types of Proposals
a) Empirical: An empirical proposal is one that presents a study based
in data and draws conclusions thereof.
b) Theoretical: A theoretical proposal is one whose main thrust is to
give principled analyses of issues. It draws connections among current
explanatory frameworks and extends them in important ways.
c) Discussion Group: A discussion group proposal is one that aims to provide
an occasion for members interested in a particular issue or set of issues
to begin collaborations. Discussion groups must be proposed each year
they are held. One objective for a discussion group, though neither unique
nor necessary, is that it become a working group in the future, possibly
within two years.
Proposal Formats
All proposals must be related to the goals of PME-NA. Discussion groups
need not have a specified format, as they are mainly a request for a place
on the schedule. Empirical and theoretical proposals may request the following
formats:
a) Research Reports: 40 minutes for presentation and discussion. These
sessions are for presentations of fully developed studies or theoretical
analysis. If a proposal is accepted as a Research Report, a 7-page final
paper will be published in the conference proceedings0
.
b) Short Orals: 15 minutes for presentation; collective discussion of
all reports will be at the session's end. these sessions are for presentations
of partial results or work in development. If a proposal is accepted as
a Short Oral, a 1-page synopsis will be published in the conference proceedings.
c) Poster Sessions: Limited to the equivalent of nine standard letter
sheets, to be displayed on a poster board. If a proposal is accepted as
a Poster, a 1-page abstract will be published in the conference proceedings.
