PROPOSALS
Revision
of Proposal Review Criteria for PME-NA Annual Meeting The 1999-2000
PME-NA Steering Committee decided to revise the Proposal Review Criteria
to better distinguish review criteria for empirical and theoretical proposals.
Empirical Proposals present a study based in data and draw conclusions
thereform. These proposals will continue to be evaluated using recent
criteria including (1) significance of question, (2) relationship to PME-NA
goals, (3) theoretical framework, (4) mode of inquiry, (5) rigor of analysis,
(6) interpretation of results, and (7) quality of writing. Questions to
consider as you write or read these proposals are as follows: Does the
study address an significant question? Is the study aligned with the goals
of PME-NA? Is the study framed by theory? Does the study employ a methodology
appropriate for the question it investigates? Does the proposal present
data analyses thereof and are the analyses supported by the data? Does
the proposal provide claims, conclusions, or suggestions that are based
in its data? Does the proposal display high quality writing?
Theoretical Proposals
present a principled analysis of issues, drawing connections among current
explanatory frameworks and extending them in important ways. These proposals
will be evaluated with revised criteria including (1) significance of
issues, (2) relationship to PME-NA goals, (3) analysis of issues, (4)
implications for theory, (5) implications for practice, and (6) quality
of writing. Questions to consider when writing or reading these proposals:
Does the proposal address issues that are important for mathematics education?
Does the proposal offer a penetrating analysis of the issues or extend
our understanding of them? Does the proposal build stronger connections
within a theory or among theories? Does the theoretical discussion have
implications for practice? Does the proposal display high quality writing?
Further information will be sent to reviewers.
