Professor
Pagán is a US cultural and intellectual historian with a particular
interest in the US/Mexican borderland. He began at Mesa Community College
and went on to receive a BA from Arizona State University and an MA from
the University of Arizona in Latin American history, and an AM and Ph.D.
from Princeton University in US history. At Princeton he was a member
of the Princeton Society of Fellows of the Woodrow Wilson Foundation,
a President's Fellow, and a National Hispanic Scholarship recipient. He
also served as an Acting Assistant Dean of Students at Princeton. Before
coming to ASU's West campus, Professor Pagán was a faculty member
of the Department of History at Williams College, and a senior program
officer in the Division of Research Program at the National Endowment
for the Humanities, working with Historically Black, Hispanic-serving,
and Tribal Colleges and Universities. He has published articles about
Latinos in the US in scholarly and popular journals, and in several encyclopedias.
His recent book, Murder at the Sleepy Lagoon: Zoot Suits, Race, and Riot
in World War II L.A. was published by the University of North Carolina
Press. He has held an NEH Fellowship for College Teachers and Independent
Scholars, and postdoctoral fellowships at the Center for the Humanities
at Wesleyan University and at the Center for US-Mexican Studies at the
University of California, San Diego. Professor Pagán also worked
with the award-winning PBS series American Experience as the lead historical
consultant for the television episode and Web site entitled “Zoot Suit
Riot.” |
