The following media
types are supported in the ITL:
- Flash drive
- Sometimes these are also referred to as "thumb", "pen", or "USB" drives. These small devices connect through a USB port and are compatible with both Macs and PCs. They are typically about the size of a small pack of gum and have capacities up to multiple gigabytes. These are extremely convenient, easily portable, and even the smallest drives provide more storage than floppy disks, while the largest can exceed the capacity of DVDs! They are smaller than CDs and DVDs and are not damaged by scratches and they are much faster and more durable than floppy disks. They are not necessarily ideal for long-term storage or archiving, but these inexpensive devices have largely replaced floppies as the best choice for physically moving files from place to place.
-
- Networked drive
- Drives that
are not physically inside the local computer but rather out on one
or more servers. A network drive can be mapped (connected) to a user's
home directory or to his or her personal space on the web server,
for example. One connects to them via software (the operating system)
and accesses them just like the hard drive.
-
- CD-ROM drive
- A type of optical
disk drive capable of reading Compact Discs. These CDs can store
large amounts of data -- up to 700MB, although the most common size
is 650MB (megabytes). A single CD-ROM has the storage capacity of
450 floppy disks, enough capacity to store about 300,000 text pages.
Since CDs are fast, universal, capacious, and inexpensive
they are an excellent storage solution.
-
- CD-Recorder/CD-ReWriter
- A type of optical
disk drive (sometimes called a CD burner), which is capable of recording
large amounts of data up to 700MB (megabytes). A single CD-R (Recordable
Compact Disc) has the storage capacity of 450 floppy disks, enough
memory to store about 300,000 text pages. CD's can be created for
either MAC , PC or for both platforms on the same disk. Certain CD-ROMs,
called CD-RWs, can be erased and re-written like floppy disks and
hard disks. You must provide your own blank CD-R or CD-RW media
in order to create CD's. Blank disks are available inexpensively
at the West campus ASU Bookstore or can be purchased at any major computer
or office supply store.
- DVD-R / DVD+ReWritable
- A type of optical
disk drive (sometimes called a DVD burner), which is capable of recording
large amounts of data up to 4.7GB (gigabytes). A single DVD-R /
DVD+ReWritable has the storage capacity of early hard disk drives.
DVDs can be created for either MAC, PC or for both
platforms on the same disk. You can also create video DVDs, which are
compatible with many consumer DVD players. You must provide your own blank
media in order to create DVD's.
