Mobile Computer Classroom (MCLab)

Are you an instructor who occasionally wants every student in your class to have a computer? The MCLab laptop carts can temporarily convert any classroom into a computer classroom. UTO Classroom Support can deliver 1 or 2 of the carts when you need them. Each cart holds 15 PC laptop computers, each with a full suite of public site software installed and each with a wireless network adapter that provides full access to the Internet.

There are no printing capabilities associated with use of the MCLab carts.

Reservation Guidelines

To reserve one or two carts, contact Technopolis at 602-543-8278. When you make your reservation, be sure to identify the ASU employee who will accept delivery of the carts, and be sure to establish a delivery time that will work both for you and for UTO. UTO observes these reservation guidelines, which are necessary to maintain a reliable and equitably-shared service:

  • MCLab carts are available for delivery only to regularly-scheduled classes in their regular classrooms.
  • Requests are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • You may request use of a cart or carts for up to 5 date-time combinations for your class. If you want to use it/them more than that, you may do so on a "standby" basis: call Technopolis between 1 and 2 business days prior to your intended use (not sooner). If the equipment is available, we'll gladly take your reservation then.
  • Reservations must be made at least 1 full business day in advance of the time needed.

Delivery

UTO Classroom Support will deliver the equipment to your location at the agreed-upon time and to perform any needed setup.  You (the instructor) must be present to sign for the equipment, and may be asked to show a picture ID at that time. You are responsible for all pieces while they are checked out. It normally takes about 15 minutes to get all laptops distributed and ready to use.

If you are not present within 5 minutes of the established delivery time, UTO staff will be forced to return the cart to storage. The cart cannot then be re-delivered. Service technicians must meet many requests for equipment delivery and setup at the start of every class period, and cannot wait longer with the equipment.

Pickup

UTO Classroom Support will return to pick up the laptop carts about 5 minutes prior to the scheduled end of your class, or at a time previously agreed upon.

It is your responsibility to make sure that students return all equipment. Please ask students to use the "shut down" option on the Start menu and power the laptops off before returning them. UTO Classroom Support will help store the laptops in the cart.

You must stay with the cart(s) until UTO Classroom Support has verified that all equipment has been returned. If something is missing, it will be noted at this time. The technician will sign the "Mobile Computer Classroom (MCLab) Transfer Confirmation" form in your presence, certifying that you are no longer responsible for the equipment.

If you leave the equipment in the classroom, and/or are not there when UTO Classroom Support arrives to pick it up, we may have to refuse to make future equipment deliveries to you. If you need to leave unexpectedly, contact Technopolis (602-543-8278). We will send someone as soon as possible to take responsibility for the equipment from you.

The laptops share a single connection to the wired network. This means that response time may be slower than expected, particularly if students are all trying to access the same Web page or network file at the same time.
