File Shares for Students

Personal File Space

If you are an ASU student, ASU provides you with 5MB of server disk space called "AFS Space" when you activate your ASURITE UserID. This space is available for you to use in connection with your ASU activities. You may request an increase in this allocation up to 50MB.

Use your file space to create your own Web page, to keep backup copies of important files, or to store files that you want to access from any campus and from home.

You can access your AFS space using a browser such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer. Point your browser to , login with your ASURITE UserID and password and then select AFS Manager.

If you are using an on-campus computer or if you are connected to the campus network via SecuRemote, you can also transfer files to and from your personal file space by using an SSH program with these settings:

Host address = general.asu.edu
User ID = your ASURITE UserID
Password = your ASURITE password

Group or Team Space

If you and your fellow students have formed a project team, club or committee, you may need space to share files and documents. We will create a directory for your group when a sponsoring faculty or full-time staff member requests it through the IT Help Desk. See the "Group space" entry on the list of available West campus file shares for server address information. The space allocated for your use is managed by your sponsors department.

Your group space will be retained until there is no longer a need for it, as determined through an annual review conducted by IT.

You will need to use SecuRemote to access your group or team space from off campus.

Read and write privileges for student team directories are established by the official team representative (the service owner).

Students may also share files using course directories, as appropriate for their classes.

Individuals may also share access to their personal AFS space.

Even if you have a disk space allocation that is greater than 10MB, you will not be able to transfer more than 10MB at a time to your AFS space.
Q&A Box (question and answer)
What's an "M Drive"?
Some people refer to AFS space as the "M drive" because of drive mapping conventions in use at Tempe campus student computing centers.
