Private Web Domain Names
Individuals and organizations of all types have discovered that the World Wide Web is an incredible communication resource. Now as never before we have a way to let others know who we are and what we can offer. This could simply involve putting a page or two on your organization's Web server. Or you may choose to register your own Web domain name and find a location to host your Web site using this domain name. For many reasons setting up a Web domain so that your information resides at "www.yourdomain.com" (or .org) is an important outreach tool.
Since domain names must be registered with InterNIC*, for which there is a fee, and hosting multiple independent domains requires special Web server software and hardware, ASU is not able to provide this service. However there are several solutions if this is a communication tool you would like to explore:
- There are many (multitudes) of Web hosting services which offer to host your organization's site and help you register your domain name with InterNIC. In some cases they will include as part of their hosting fee the InterNIC registration fees.
One place to begin is at the Yahoo Domain Registration page. You might also look in the telephone yellow pages under "Internet Products and Services" for a local service provider. This solution offers you the most unique Web domain name possibilities (www.yourdomain.com).
- If this option doesn't work for you, you could consider setting up and maintaining your own Web server on our network. In this scenario your Web site could have an address like yourorg.west.asu.edu. The drawback is that you would need to maintain your server hardware and software yourself, or enter into a Service Level Agreement with IT at the West campus.
- If neither of these solutions will work, you can use the West campus Web services to host your ASU-related Web site, using our standard Web address: www.west.asu.edu/yourorg/. Please see our Web Developers' Resources for more information.
