Computing Lab
Usage Guidelines
Technopolis and the Las Casas Computing Lab are shared resources. Follow
these guidelines to help maintain a productive environment for everyone
who uses
them.
- Be familiar with and follow university guidelines on use of computing
resources:
- Help us maintain reliable resources for everyone:
- Erase any files you temporarily store on the local hard disks. Use
removable media or personal
AFS space to permanently store your files.
- Do not tamper with operating system settings.
- Report any problems with the equipment or software to the Technopolis
staff, or, for Las Casas, to the management staff in the Community
Center.
- Help us maximize availability of needed equipment for you and your fellow students:
- You may use any unoccupied computer that is turned on. If you want
to use a computer that is not turned on, please ask site staff.
- If all computers are occupied, a staff member will place you on a
wait list. Be available when your name is called, or your name will
be taken off the list.
- Don't use a computer that has a locally-attached scanner or
printer unless you need these devices or unless there is no other computer
available. Leave them for someone who needs the special resources.
- If you leave your computer unattended for 15 minutes, it will be
made available to anyone who is waiting.
- Do not play computer games while people are waiting.
- Do not use a computer chair if you don't need the computer.
- Be knowledgeable and courteous about sharing printer resources:
- Follow procedures for printing. Be aware
of when charges will "kick in" for you, and do not ask us
to provide "free printing" because of problems that you could
have prevented.
- Do not print single-sided pages. If your instructor requires single-sided
pages, show her or him this policy. If they do not lift the requirement,
notify Technopolis staff, providing name of instructor and name of
class. West campus academic leaders have agreed that this print policy
is appropriate.
- At the Pharos print release stations, do not release more than 3
jobs if anyone is waiting to release their jobs.
- Help keep the noise level down, and help keep the site clean:
- Feel free to talk quietly with your colleagues while working, but please use group study rooms when you need to have lengthy and/or animated group discussions.
- Mute or turn off your cell phone and pager. Leave the site if you
need to use your cell phone.
- Do not play computer sound or video that unreasonably interferes
with the ability of another person to work comfortably in a public
site. In evaluating and balancing the rights of patrons, the site staff
will refer to the University Policy
Prohibiting Harassment and the corresponding First Amendment Guidelines.
- We do not allow food, uncovered drinks, chewing tobacco, or smoking in Technopolis.
- If you bring your children into the site, you are responsible for their behavior as well as for your own.

| What if someone is not following these guidelines,
so it's hard for me to work? |
First talk to the person or people. They may not be aware
that they are violating guidelines and/or are bothering you.
If this doesn't work notify
a staff member. Staff will ask people who do not cooperate to leave the site. We do call the police
if it is necessary. |
 |
Technopolis has head phones available for checkout. You might try using these, with or without music playing through them, if you find the ambient noise in the site distracting.
We also have free disposable ear plugs available -- just ask us for a pair if you need them. |
