It is co-edited by John D. Buenker, professor emeritus of history at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and author or editor of eight books on various aspects of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, and Joseph Buenker, assistant librarian at Arizona State University at the West campus.

• The EGAPE set consists of eighteen thematic essays of approximately 3000 words each, ranging from "Art and Architecture" to "Foreign and International Relations," each written by a prominent authority in the field, over 400 biographic entries, and nearly 500 other entries dealing with laws, organizations, events, court decisions, concepts and other relevant and important topics. Each of the bibliographic and other entries ranges from 250 to 1000 words, depending upon their significance.

• Volume III consists almost entirely of 100 documents and other primary sources geared to many of the most important entries.

• Scattered throughout the three volumes are more than 200 photographs and other graphics and some 50 "sidebars" - brief expositions of interesting and intriguing sidelights not deemed significant enough to warrant being entries.
