Discusses Native Americans in post-Columbus America (released just after Crown), survival humor, plurality of Indian cultures. Moyers calls their characters marginal. Dorris asks America to uphold treaties, and comments that unlike other American minorities seeking social change through new legislation, Indians want the old laws enforced. Erdrich corrects Moyers take of victim psychology (Marie Lazarre with Sister Leopolda) to ironic survival humor. Erdrich jokes about how when missionaries came with the book Indians had all the land, and that now the missionaries have all the land and Indians only the book. Dorris comments on group responsibility and identity (Native) versus individuality (Western/American). Erdrich: tribal and individual survival within a dominant (and at times hostile) country.
