while the debate over distance learning in higher education has focused on the value of synchronous learning and seat time, distance learning in grammar schools has focused on bringing educational resources from outside the school into the classroom.... K-8 teachers are not turning the instruction of their students over to distant teachers, rather, they are collaborating with them.

Back to faculty: on an individual level or institutional level the issues cannot be resolved, but think of the web as a tool for learning.

K-12 and faculty: are students learning skills (drill & practice) or acquiring knowledge?
 
 

Today’s "constructivist" lesson:

The whole thing was "pretend you are…"--gives you permission to set aside temporarily your own beliefs, opinions, and concerns. Makes the group more comfortable.

Faculty issues:
Read & discuss with partner- can’t hide but can ask questions of peer, can add more - check out your ideas, RANK- so must read all, POST ON BOARD- so must do it.

K-12
Low risk situation. You have no "shoulds" for lessons, It’s OK to be creative. Topics weren’t "college " subjects, they were high school - so there was no connection to interfere with your ideas about college instruction.
Work in group - get ideas flowing, laughter
plenty of tools to keep your mind active
People were justifying the "learning" going on with the tools.
Reporting - stimulating, fun, realization that everyone can be creative.
YOU WERE NOT BEING TEACHERS, you were being yourselves, managing your own learning--connecting to what you know, following your learning style and motivation, using your skills or enhancing them in a non-threatening way.
