Crossing the Valley

by: Maria Beteran

Arizona State University is a campus where there is somewhat of a diverse

population. As a student, at ASU West campus, I decided to take a history class

on modern Mexico as one of my electives but

mainly to know in depth the history of the country

and its government. That history class is composed

of students who are Caucasian, Hispanic and Asian. In this class I met Otoniel

Carrillo, a twenty five year old student

majoring in Global Business with the

hope of finishing school and graduating

 with a B.A.  During the semester I

 visited a maquiladora in Nogales,

Mexico, as an assignment for class.  Talking to Otoniel, I found out that he is from

Nogales, Mexico. Now the semester is about finished, and I now know much more

about his life here in the  US as an immigrant and about life in border towns, in

this case, the border  between Nogales, Mexico and Nogales, Arizona.

We had a more in depth conversation about his experience as an immigrant in

the United States on a Sunday afternoon and discussed the differences of life here

in the US in comparison to that in Mexico. It was a sunny day, cool

temperatures, birds singing, and a fountain in front of us creating a tranquil

setting. Our conversation started, I listened while he told his migration story.
