John lee Stott Sr., my Great
great great grandfather, was born in Glascow, Scotland, in 1838. He had an
older brother who was the captain the clipper ship called the Birkenshire.
These clipper ships built by the shipwrights of Glascow, were among the
fastest ships ever built. Shortly after the discovery of gold in California,
he sailed with his brother to San Francisco.
Being in his early teens and too young to prospect for gold, he obtained
employment at a San Francisco mercantile company called Neustaedter
Brothers. This firm was the first to sell the pants made from blue indigo
dyed canvas sail cloth by Levi Strauss.
