Borders in
Arizona
As
soon as I walked into Sal’s Barber Shop, I felt as if I had just
crossed the border. I knew this was a perfect location for my
migrants in the city project. Sal’s barbershop is located on the
northwest corner of 83rd avenue and Peoria. The customers
were predominately of Hispanic decent. Sal spoke both English and
Spanish to all the customers. The area was surrounded by other shops
that included a clothing store and 99 cent store. I found it very
interesting how many Hispanics came to Sal’s and felt at home with
him. This is one of a few Spanish speaking stores in the area. There
is not doubt that the area is surrounded by Hispanics, which feel
comfortable visiting stores and barbershops like Sal’s.
This place of business gives back to the community by providing to
its customers and sponsoring other Hispanic businesses. I was so
impressed that I decided to get my haircut there!
In
conclusion, immigrants tend to space themselves out and create
“border” zones within our community. This project allowed me to
visit a location that actually had a Mexican zone and now others
will be able to visit this location as well.
