The McLemore Clan

           I chose a picture of my family’s Coat of Arms as my family object. My ancestors are originally from Argyle, Scotland. I spoke to my grandmother about the name and she told me that as far back as anyone could remember, the first male child was given the name James McLemore, which is my father’s name. In researching the name myself, I found that the first McLemores to come to America were two brothers, James and Abraham and resided in Virginia in the early 18^th century. The name Mclemore was originally formed when the clans McCollum and Moore joined together and renamed themselves MacCullmore.

            The family Coat of Arms is fairly traditional. The colors red, silver and gold symbolize military strength, sincerity and generosity, respectively. The engrailed heraldic lines represent the earth or land and the three shamrocks symbolize eternity. The Latin phrase “per orbeum” means “through the world” and was the war-cry of the family.
