"My Journey to
Mi Casita"
I went to 19th
Ave and Northern because it was close to my home. I also chose this
location for my alternative assignment. When I went for my
alternative assignment I took my Grandmother. My experience there
was unlike any that I had experienced before and the dynamic was
heightened by my bringing my grandma along. I told her I was going
to some research, and told her about the project. She insisted on
coming with me as there are “safety in numbers” as she so eloquently
put it. My grandmother is 70 years old, and grew up in Chicago, so
naturally she is no stranger to minorities and minority areas. The
area on Durango consisted of many interesting things that I would
not have normally been attributed to a border neighborhood. There
was a taco type shop, Mi Casitria it was called. The food smelled
really, really good, however it did not look to clean.

I wasn’t going to eat
there, however I was hungry and thought I should be a bit
adventurous. They have this thing there called Pollo Fundio. I had
never had it before as I am not much on Mexican food although my
boyfriend is part Puerto Rican, and loves the stuff. I saw someone
else eating it, so I decided to try it. It was so, so good. I can
not explain how good it was. I want to report that I did not get
sick and even tried the rice and beans that came with it for the
full Mexican experience. The next Monday I went out to Carlos O
Brian’s with is an Americanized Mexican food restaurant and ordered
Pollo Fundio because it was on the menu. It was not the same thing,
and when I got it, I was very surprised. I will forever make runs
for my pollo to Mi Casitria.
