"R:20 in A
Glass House: The Life and Times of Raul Castro."
A
45-minute, one-act play based on the life of Raul H. Castro,
Arizona’s only Hispanic governor and former U.S. Ambassador to El
Salvador, Bolivia and Argentina. The current production is 45
minutes long. It’s an early rendition of what will eventually be a
full-length, two-hour production set to premiere in next year.
Mr.
Castro, who lives in Nogales with his wife Pat, was born June 12,
1916 in Cananea, Sonora in Mexico. He came to the United States when
he was two years old during the Mexican Revolution. Over the course
of his life, Mr. Castro has been a farm worker, miner, boxer,
teacher, lawyer, U.S. ambassador to three countries (El Salvador,
Bolivia and Argentina), and he served as Arizona’s only Latino
governor in the mid 1970s.
“In
a Glass House” is a new work-in-progress presented by Colores
Actors-Writers Workshop (CAWW). This production was recently staged
at Lunchtime Theater at the Herberger Theater Center. Garcia is
producing artistic director of CAWW.
This presentation of “In a Glass House” is a one-act version of
what will become a full-length slated for presentation in 2008 at
the John Paul Theater at Phoenix College. Phoenix College is home to
the Raul Castro Institute. The play is based on a series of personal
interviews with Gov. Castro conducted by the playwright and the
unpublished biography, “Adversity is My Angel”, by Jack H. Lasseter
and Ben F. Williams, Sr.
A
documentary based on the life of Mr. Castro is also in production in
conjunction with the University of Arizona.
