fireflies
frozen in a red-orange ricochet
   scatter shatter
   into glimmering shards
of twilight
the fire swooping through the clouds
   night’s first crashing wave

bleak black waves
   whose cold silver currents
        rush to the bottom
  hold my breath
  reach for my breath
as a god reaching for his soul
      I dive
        dive deeper
   into the crystalline fountain
where light no longer burns
and day has since departed

sudden your shadow rises
fierce like the angels who rebelled
   razor wings to cradle me
   hypnotic hands to heal me
we swim we move
      lightning bludgeons the sky
   I reach for the surface
      and you keep me
   still you keep me under

then we keep still
tread through the spread of ice
   silent shock waves
  crackling above and below
we cling to a vineyard of new sun
tangled up in our own foam
         stretch stretch the flailing limbs
   at the surface
                   almost
   at the surface
             one breath away from dawn
   still you keep me
still you keep me under
