| The American Studies Writing Prize
The American Studies Writing Prize was founded in 1993, with an endowment from Stephen and Sonya Pyne. Its purpose is to encourage writers and researchers at Arizona State University West. The Prize is awarded in two categories, the research paper and the creative nonfiction narrative. A board of ASU West faculty members chooses the winners. The research paper must have been written for a course at ASU West. Papers in any discipline are welcome. The contest is not limited to American Studies majors. The nonfiction narrative category includes memoir, personal narrative, personal essays, and even magazine articles. These essays need not have been written for an ASU West class--or even for any class at all. Winning entries will be published in PaloVerde, ASU West's award-winning online literary journal. In addition, winners get a gift certificate to the ASU West bookstore and our undying affection. How to Submit Your Entry Essays and research papers should be typed or word-processed, double-spaced, in Courier or a Times family typeface. Type your name, address, telephone number, and (if applicable) e-mail address on a cover sheet accompanying your submission. DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME ON THE PAPER OR IN THE PAPER'S RUNNING HEAD. The research paper should follow a standard style manual (such as the MLA Handbook or the APA Publication Manual). In-text citations or end-notes are preferable to footnotes. Please send copies, NOT originals! Manuscripts will not be returned. You may submit your entry in hard copy or as an attachment to an e-mail message, or in both formats. Attachments should be saved as Word-compatible documents or in rich text format (.rtf). Send or bring hard-copy submissions to: Victoria
