Jessica, by Sir Samuel Luke Fildes, was originally exhibited in 1888. It appeared among a series of twenty-one pictures entitled "Shakespeaere's Heroines," sponsored by the newspaper Graphic.

"There will come a Christian boy, will be worth a Jewess' eye" (The Merchant of Venice, Act 2, Scene 5).
