My Teaching Philosophy

A theme that describes my teaching philosophy is life-long learning.  I believe that people can and will learn in any environment or circumstance.  As a teacher, I have the responsibility to adapt the variables for positive and productive learning.  The variable environment I refer to begins in the classroom and extends into the school, family, and community.  I believe that every student has strengths and needs and that the whole student should be valued, recognized and respected.  Because I believe in life-long learning, as new teaching strategies are researched and refined, I would study their effectiveness and appropriateness for use with each individual student.  Therefore, I will promote and nurture life-long learning for others and myself.

     My Philosophy of Behavior Management

Because I believe that every student can learn, I believe that every student can develop self-discipline.  I believe that discipline should be preventative and positive.  By self-discipline, I mean that students can learn to be aware of their actions through self- monitoring, learn to evaluate their actions, and ultimately, to regulate and reward their actions.  By preventative discipline, I mean that the expectations, rules and consequences are carefully designed, with student input, to promote positive self-concept and self-esteem, and to maintain student dignity.  Preventative discipline also means that students are taught behavior management skills through direct instruction.
