Interdisciplinary artist unveils performance installation April 5 at ASU's West campus

Mar. 30, 2005

Exhibit is culmination of week in residence at university

Carole Kim, an internationally known interdisciplinary artist, will unveil her performance installation at ASU’s West campus at 3:30 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, in the University Center Building, Second Stage West. The piece, “[moor] ROOM,” explores Kim’s ongoing interest in the illusory spatial architecture of layered video projections with the addition of recorded and live sound.

The Los Angeles-based artist has worked in the mediums of performance, installation, sculpture, video, digital imaging, movement improvisation and mixed-media assemblage. “At its roots, Kim’s work investigates art as a form of interaction that can involve anywhere from a few people to everyone who enters a space. She’s also engaged in the challenge of making video a more plastic, responsive-in-the-moment medium utilizing the camera as a visual instrument. Her current focus is on improvisational time-based media performance, often interfacing with the new music community,” said Jeff Kennedy, associate artistic director for ASU’s Department of Interdisciplinary Arts and Performance in the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences.

Kim’s performances will be the culmination of a week in residence at ASU’s West campus where she worked with department students who helped her install the piece. Admission for “[moor] ROOM” is free; event parking is $2.

ASU’s West campus is at 4701 W. Thunderbird Rd., Phoenix. For more information, visit www.west.asu.edu/IAP/events.
