May. 4, 2005

About 900 students expected to graduate

Convocation ceremonies will be held Friday, May 13, at Arizona State University’s West campus to honor about 900 students set to graduate with bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Students will earn degrees in a wide variety of fields including criminal justice, education, global business, communication studies, recreation and tourism management, social work, and interdisciplinary arts and sciences.

There will be two separate outdoor ceremonies, one at 9 a.m. and the other at 6 p.m., in order to accommodate the growing number of students and their guests from all four colleges at the West, which is located at 4701 W. Thunderbird Rd., Phoenix. Both ceremonies will begin with a grand processional of students, faculty, deans and other administrators through the Paley Gates in the center courtyard. After hearing congratulatory remarks from the provost, students will proceed to their respective college convocations.

The 9 a.m. convocations will be held for the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences on the Fletcher Library lawn, and the School of Global Management and Leadership on the soccer field.

The 6 p.m. convocations will be held for the College of Human Services on the Fletcher Library lawn, and the College of Teacher Education and Leadership on the soccer field.

“We’re committed to meeting the needs of a diverse group of students who will take their place as active participants in a rapidly changing social, political and natural environment. I’m very impressed with the scholarship, community service efforts and contributions to the social and cultural milieu of the community from our graduates and faculty alike,” said Emily Cutrer, dean of the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences.

“We’re in the business of preparing leaders for today’s dynamic and global business world. I feel confident that the students graduating this term will be equipped to work effectively with partners across the globe,” said Leanne Atwater, dean of the School of Global Management and Leadership.

“Our graduates, who come from a broad range of programs including communication studies, criminal justice and criminology, recreation and tourism, social work, nursing and gerontology, are ready to assume the leadership roles necessary to create and manage community organizations in our society,” said Lesley Di Mare, dean of the College of Human Services.

“This year’s graduates are prepared to be outstanding classroom teachers and educational leaders who enter the field of education to change the lives of their students and to make schools the best possible learning places for all children,” said Joseph Ryan, dean of the College of Teacher Education and Leadership.

On Thursday, May 12, the Barrett Honors College, recently named “Best of America” by the editors of Reader’s Digest, will hold a reception for its 22 graduates from the West campus at 6 p.m., in the University Center Building, La Sala.

Also, on May 12, the estimated 6,800 spring graduates from all ASU campuses have been invited to participate in a university-wide commencement at 10 a.m. at the Wells Fargo Arena at ASU’s Tempe campus. ASU’s spring commencement will be broadcast live beginning at 10 a.m. MST on the Web at: http://dmit.asu.edu/live.
