ASU brings international cultural festival to the West Valley

Nov. 2, 2005

The International Education and Events Committee at Arizona State University’s West campus is hosting the sixth annual Cultural Festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 19. The festival features international musical performances, a marketplace and community organizations. This event is part of the International Education Week, which includes a weeklong series of activities.

“The purpose of the Cultural Festival is to increase the awareness and understanding of the diverse community in which we live,” said Elena Mitchell, program coordinator in Multicultural Student Services at ASU’s West campus. She hopes the festival will promote both fun and education relating to the various cultures found in the community.

The festival’s marketplace showcases American Indian arts and crafts, Chinese calligraphy and paper folding, Olodu Mare (Africa), the Mantra Collection (India) and Ten Thousand Villages (from more than 30 developing countries).

Musical performances are scheduled from West Java, the Caribbean, Samoa and the Pacific Islands, Japan, India and Sudan, featuring performances by the Fushicho Daiko Phoenix Drummers and the Arizona Lost Boys Center.

The Cultural Festival is a free event and will be held on the lawn in front of Fletcher Library at ASU’s West campus, 4701 W. Thunderbird Road, Phoenix. The event is sponsored by ASU’s International Student Association, Multicultural Student Services and the Office of Public Events at the West campus.
