ASU lifelong learning program brings Arizona author series to Sun City Communities

Nov. 14, 2005

Sun City residents will have the opportunity to meet authors from Arizona State University and the local community as part of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at ASU. Registration for the Arizona author series continues through November.

As part of the five-part series, Robert Mittelstaedt, dean of ASU’s W. P. Carey School of Business, will discuss his recent book “Will Your Next Mistake be Fatal?”. In his book, Mittelstaedt contends disasters rarely happen from a single incident or mistake.

“Small mistakes turn into larger chains of events that result in disaster,” said Mittelstaedt. “Clearly, you can’t stop natural disasters from occurring. However, as we saw with the onset and devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the way organizations respond or do not respond to disaster influences the degree to which they are successful or unsuccessful.”

The author series also includes ASU professors Ramsey Eric Ramsey, “Leaving us to Wonder: An Essay on the Questions Science Can’t Ask,” and Richard Morris, “Sinners, Lovers, and Heroes: An Essay on Memorializing in Three American Cultures”; instructor James Mitsui, “A Three-Cornered World”; and Arizona Republic columnist Clay Thompson, “Valley 101: A Slightly Skewed Guide to Living in Arizona.”

For registration and class information, call the local ASU lifelong learning office — Sun City (623) 974-6985, Sun City Grand (623) 546-7429 and Sun City West (623) 584-4288 — or visit online at: www.west.asu.edu/lifelong/osher.

The Osher Lifelong Institute at Arizona State University serves residents in Sun City, Sun City Grand and Sun City West. A recent grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation allows ASU to expand and enhance its lifelong learning programs to serve residents across the Valley. The Osher Foundation collaborates with universities nationwide to offer intellectually stimulating learning opportunities for older adults.
