ASU offers veterans' history project workshop
Nov. 18, 2005
As part of its lecture series, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Arizona State University presents its veterans’ history project workshop to the Sun City communities on Dec. 8. Larry Edmonds, an ASU faculty associate, will speak to the importance of collecting veterans’ stories.
“This country is losing about 1,700 veterans a day,” according to Edmonds. “If we don’t capture veterans’ stories now, they will take them to their graves. Nothing will be archived for our future generations.”
The workshop is part of a nationwide initiative sponsored by the American Folklore Center of the Library of Congress to preserve veterans’ stories and their memories: from World War I to current-day conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Workshop participants will learn how to interview veterans, their surviving family members and civilians who supported the troops. The interviews will ultimately be archived in the Library of Congress.
“Whether you are in favor of war or against it, you have to be for our troops and the contributions that they made,” Edmonds said.
