Arizona Board of Regents vote to approve new ASU doctoral program

Dec. 2, 2005

Ed.D. first doctoral program at West campus

Arizona State University announced today that it will begin offering a new doctoral program in the College of Teacher Education and Leadership. The Doctor of Education (Ed.D) is the first doctoral program at the West campus. The doctoral program was unanimously approved by the Arizona Board of Regents at its Dec. 2 meeting.

"We are pleased to be able to expand our program offerings to include our first doctoral program at ASU’s West campus," said Mark Searle, ASU vice president and provost at the West campus. "We see this program as a way to expand our support to our community by providing outstanding K-12 leaders.”

The Ed.D. program will have two distinct specializations: leadership in policy and administration and leadership of teaching innovation. Some areas in which the doctoral program will specifically prepare students include strategic planning; demographic profiles of students in diverse communities; principles of leadership; and the relationship between a school district and its community.

The Ed.D. program is designed to produce educational leaders who can apply the latest in research techniques that address the issues in schools and education agencies throughout Arizona and the nation.

“The degree was created with an eye toward intellectual rigor to prepare executive-level education leaders and practitioners at the state, regional and national levels,” said Joseph Ryan, dean of the College of Teacher Education and Leadership. “Program courses were designed to meet the complexity, diversity and constantly changing needs of today’s public schools demanding highly trained leaders.”

The curriculum includes directed field-based studies in leader-scholar communities and successful completion of an education innovation dissertation. It requires substantial study outside the College of Teacher Education Leadership, allowing students the opportunity to enhance their focus through studies in other programs such as management, social and behavioral sciences, and communication studies.

The first cohort of students will begin working on their Ed.D. in fall 2006. Classes are flexible and designed to meet the needs of working professionals, offering a combination of face-to-face and online course delivery. By completing coursework online and during the summer months, doctoral students will benefit by interacting with colleagues and faculty while continuing their professional careers.

Students interested in applying for admission to the Ed.D. program must meet all the requirements of the ASU Division of Graduate Studies. The College of Teacher Education and Leadership doctoral program is open to students who have a master’s degree in education or another field appropriate for the doctorate in educational leadership.

“Today’s educational leaders must have a strong background in current research and trends in education leadership, which our doctoral program can provide,” said Ryan. “The College of Teacher Education and Leadership has such strong faculty, and support from the university, I’m confident our Ed.D. will be a success.”
