ASU holds college convocations Dec. 17 at West campus

Dec. 9, 2004

More than 750 students poised to graduate

Arizona State University's fall 2004 convocation at the university's West campus will be a festive gathering for the more than 750 students poised to graduate from the four colleges located on campus. Students dressed in caps and gowns will ceremoniously enter the campus through the Paley Gates and continue in a processional through campus to their college ceremonies for individual recognition of their educational achievements.

There will be two separate outdoor ceremonies, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon, in order to accommodate students from all four colleges at the West campus. Both ceremonies will begin with a grand processional, the first at 10 a.m. and the other at 3 p.m., followed by individual college convocations on either the Fletcher Lawn or the Soccer Field.

The morning convocations will be held for the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, and the School of Global Management and Leadership. These ceremonies are scheduled to conclude at 11 a.m.

The afternoon convocations will be held for the College of Human Services and the College of Teacher Education and Leadership. These ceremonies are scheduled to end at 4 p.m.

Barrett Honors College will hold a reception for its graduates at 12:15 p.m. in Kiva Lecture Hall.

The New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences will graduate an estimated 162 students this fall. "We're committed to meeting the needs of a diverse group of students who will take their place as active participants in a rapidly changing social, political and natural environment," said Dean Emily Cutrer. "I'm very impressed with the scholarship, community service efforts and contributions to the social and cultural milieu of the community from our graduates and faculty alike."

The School of Global Management and Leadership will graduate an expected 256 students this fall, including more than 60 post-graduate degrees. "We're in the business of preparing leaders for today's dynamic and global business world," said Interim Dean Leanne Atwater. "I feel confident that the students graduating this term will be equipped to work effectively with partners across the globe," she said.

The College of Human Services will graduate an estimated 117 students this fall. "With a broad range of programs including communication studies, criminal justice and criminology, nursing, recreation and tourism management, and social work, our graduates are ready to assume the leadership roles that are needed to create and manage community organizations that are effective in changing the lives of individuals who reach out for support," said Interim Dean Lesley Di Mare.

The College of Teacher Education and Leadership will graduate an estimated 241 students this term, about a quarter of whom have earned post-graduate degrees at ASU. "This year's graduates are prepared to be outstanding classroom teachers and educational leaders who enter the field of education because they plan to have a significant and positive impact on their students, schools, and communities," said Interim Dean Joseph Ryan.

About 4,000 graduates from all ASU campuses have been invited to participate in a universitywide commencement on Dec. 16 at Wells Fargo Arena at the Tempe campus. This includes the more than 750 graduates from the West campus and the estimated 400 graduates from the East campus. The fall commencement will be broadcast live beginning at 10 a.m. MST on the Web at: http://is.asu.edu/live

Graduation Terminology

Commencement: A cap-and-gown ceremony where the degree is officially conferred on the graduate by the president of the university. The official conferring of degrees will be held in an optional, universitywide ceremony at Wells Fargo Arena at the Tempe Campus on Dec. 16, where all campuses will participate.

Convocation: A cap-and-gown assembly where students who share a particular affiliation within the university gather to celebrate becoming graduates.
